OK, OK, I've decided recently to make this "Top 10" list of best westerns grow to a "Top 20".  I've sneaked in some films that may not really deserve it, but that I enjoyed, so there.

The Western has been one of the longest-standing genres in Hollywood. Westerns were big business all through the first half of the century with such great names as John Wayne appearing on the screens. The 60's brought fresh blood to the genre with the so-called Spaghetti Westerns, Westerns that were now made in Europe, and particularly in Italy with director Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood. The Western fell out of favor with modern audiences in the 70's (especially after the box-office disaster that was Heaven's Gate) though occasionally some studio decides to revive their original successes every few years, the most popular of these recent films being Tombstone, Silverado, Wyatt Earp, and Unforgiven.
