First off, I must admit I have a weak spot for science-fiction in general and science-fiction films in particular. I have (very probably) seen the majority of all theatrically-released English-language science-fiction films that have appeared between 1950 and the present, as well as my fair share of international, direct-to-video, and made-for-TV ones as well. To be honest, most of them are terrible (Plan 9 From Outer Space immediately comes to mind, of course, as does Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, etc.), but a surprisingly large number of them are fascinating, wonderful, and exciting.

Due in part to some huge science-fiction box-office hits such as Star Wars, E.T., and more recently Jurassic Park and Independence Day, Hollywood has been spewing big-budget Sci-Fi films every high season. That most of them fail miserably (The Arrival, Sphere, The Postman, Wing Commander, etc.) doesn't seem to deter them, thank goodness. Now if only they realized that people go see a science-fiction movie for the story and not just the effects...
