Romance - the very word evokes candlelight dinners, vows of eternal Love, and theatrical conundrums. As movies, the genre can be comedy, drama or historical epics; they can be of stories and people from around the neighborhood or from far-away, exotic lands. They can soothe and uplift the spirit or break your heart; make you smile at the human spirit, laugh at the silliness of humanity, or wallow in its wickedness. Romances can be silly (as many Hollywood productions are wont to be) or they can be deliberate and eye-opening, opening a window into our own lives and relationships, or giving a portrait of sweeping emotions and larger-than-life tragedies that are completely alien to us. And for all these things and more, they have become a staple of world cinema and, for good and bad, will stay an integral part of it.
