- All
About My Mother
- American
Beauty
- a funny, well shot satire on American suburbanites, with a terrific
performance by Kevin Spacey; may not be destined to win, but a sure
contender for Best Picture
- Being
John Malkovich
- a zany, surreal and thoroughly original comedy
- The
Blair Witch Project
- revolutionized the way people see horror films and independent
productions - and the movie was pretty good, too
- Election
- hilarious send-up of high school life and election campaigns
- Eyes Wide Shut
- Fight
Club
- what I believe is the best film of 1999, and one of the most
in-your-face-go-for-the-jugular movie experiences I've ever had
- Galaxy
Quest
- the most fun I've had all year, a
smart, action-packed goofball comedy that pokes fun at Star Trek
and its ilk
- Go
- a fast-paced, energetic black comedy that manages to mix a gritty sense of
realism with its humor.
- The
Insider
- fascinating, powerful drama about a real-life tobacco whistle-blower and
behind-the-scenes 60 Minutes debacle.
- The
Iron Giant
- made for kids but just as entertaining for adults, and with a
retro-style all its own
- The
Legend of 1900
- slow-paced, lavishly produced melodrama has some fabulous scenes
and many poetic moments
- The
Limey
- a solid small scale crime drama boasting a great turn by Terence Stamp
that almost guarantees him an Oscar nomination
- Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - often
described as a Brit Pulp Fiction, this action/suspense/thriller has,
in reality, a style, humor, and sensibility all its own
- The
Matrix
- an inventive action flick, full of kinetic camera work, sci-fi gothic
horror themes, impressive visual effects and Hong Kong filmmaking influences
- the most original American action films in years
- Princess
Mononoke
- finally seen on our shores, this Japanese anime classic has an epic
scope, brilliant animation and adult themes that most American productions
can only dream of
- Run
Lola Run
- mixing different styles of filmmaking into a simple suspense story
with three very different outcomes made this German film one of the most
entertaining, and most original, of the year
- The
Sixth Sense
- a deceptively simple supernatural drama well told, well directed, and
well photographed with a surprise ending that actually works
- South
Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
- the foulest and most politically incorrect satire of American life
comes to the big screen and takes on every taboo subject of American life
and ideals
- Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace
- Love it or hate it, it was one of the most impressive displays of special
effects and production values over story ever put to screen. And, heck, it
was a visit into the Star Wars universe again.
- Stir
of Echoes
- an eerie, unsettling mystery / horror film whose first half
really gives the viewer goose bumps
- Three
Kings
- the film didn't quite live up to the terrific first half hour,
but the combination of original style, political subtext and adventure made
for an entertaining war satire
- Toy
Story 2
- even better than the original, the computer animation was amazing and
the ideas, and the fun, never stopped
- Xiu
Xiu: the Sent Down Girl
- a delicate, heart-wrenching, beautifully shot drama on the life of a
young Chinese girl
